Agriculture & Rural Development

Manitobans understand that agriculture is an important part of our economy.

Not only do we rely on farming and agriculture to provide nutritious and local food, the agri-food industry is one of our province’s biggest export industries.

  • Despite farmers requesting it, the last Conservative government refused to create a permanent excess moisture insurance program—a key component of any agriculture program, especially one in flood-prone Manitoba. Our NDP government created the first such program in Canada in 2000.

  • Our support for the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, the Food Development Centre and the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research will allow producers to compete in the world economy armed with the latest innovations in agriculture.

  • We are investing in the future of agriculture for farmers and businesses, while at the same maintaining the important risk-management programs, such as AgriInsurance, they rely on.

The agriculture and agri-food industries provide good jobs in Manitoba—34,000 direct jobs and tens of thousands of indirect jobs. We will continue to invest in innovation, research and targeted on-farm infrastructure to keep those industries growing.
