Winnipeg Art Gallery Centennial Anniversary

I rise to recognize an iconic cultural institution: the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) and recognize its 100th Anniversary year. Founded in 1912, the WAG is Canada’s oldest public gallery and one of its largest. After occupying various premises, the unique limestone structure opened in 1971. Located just down the street, this distinct building is a prominent and breathtaking Manitoban landmark.

The WAG has long been a leader in nurturing and showcasing the visual arts. Through exhibits, programs and special events, the WAG plays a vital role in our community, inspiring, educating, enlightening and entertaining visitors of all ages and from all over. The gallery regularly hosts international touring exhibits and rotates its vast collection of over 22,500 pieces, benefitting all Manitobans and visitors.

Remarkably, the gallery is home to the largest collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world. It is renowned for preserving the precious Inuit culture for the entire world to enjoy and appreciate.

As a proud Manitoban institution, the WAG showcases Manitoban and Canadian works at every opportunity. Its centennial celebrations recognize the contributions Manitobans have made to the gallery over the past 100 years and honour those who have supported the gallery with their vision and expertise.

The current 100 Masters: Only in Canada exhibition brings together 50 Canadian and 50 European and American works, spanning the last six centuries. It features pieces from 30 galleries, representing more than 500 years of art. Included in the exhibition are major artworks that represent some of the most important movements in international art history, from the 16th century to the present.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone at the WAG on this 100th anniversary. The Manitoba Government is proud to support your efforts. Your work has enriched audiences for an amazing 100 years, and we look forward to the next 100.
