Ours is a community that thrives on volunteerism and service.

On April 24th, we will continue a long-standing tradition of celebrating our dedicated volunteers at the 13th Annual Assiniboia Community Appreciation Night.

This event, which I host with the support of many dedicated community businesses, gives us a chance to publicly recognize and thank the people who volunteer with the many organizations that can be found in Assiniboia and in West Winnipeg more generally.

Many volunteers have spent countless hours and even years contributing their time and talents to the well-being of our community. Below are just a few of the amazing nominees I’d like to tell you about.

  • Will and Candace Hubbard spent 13 years with the Scouts even though they had no children attending the group at the time—in fact Candace guided the largest Beaver Scout colony in Winnipeg.

  • Charlene Wintink joined the Crestview School Children’s Centre Board when her first child began attending the centre. That was 15 years ago and she is still going strong!

  • Andrew Krashewski is a Goldwing Ambassador at the airport having welcomed over 3.5-million travellers to "friendly Manitoba".

  • Sharon Larouche organizes summer carnivals, socials and Sunday bingos at the local community club.

  • Doreen Pattie has volunteered with Girl Guides for over 30 years, acting as a mentor to other guiders.

Organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, the Canadian Association of Retired People, Optimist Club and Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans in Canada alongside numerous schools, service clubs, sports organizations and others have been enriched by the hard-working dedication of these volunteers. A wide variety of organizations gives everyone the chance to contribute their own unique talents towards making Assiniboia an even better community than it already is.

Taking the time to thank the numerous volunteers in our community and everyone involved in the annual Appreciation Night is one of the best aspects of my job as your representative. A big thank you to business and community members for continuing to sponsor the evening and making it very special.

I would like to close by quoting Margaret Mead, who said "… never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world".

Through the efforts of volunteers like you, the world changes a bit for the better every single day. Thank you!
