Spring has finally arrived and there are a number of project updates I’d like to report on.

The Clara Hughes Recreation Park renovations announced last fall should be completed by the middle of the summer, weather permitting.

The underground drainage was completed last fall, so the grounds should dry up quickly, notwithstanding the late melt. Everyone is looking forward to using the new playground, plaza, and a skatepod for at least part of the summer. Look for the ‘Coming Soon’ sign.

Although Elmwood-East Kildonan Coun. Thomas Steen, and MLAs Matt Wiebe (Concordia), Erna Braun (Rossmere) and I have worked together on this important community project, we have been spurred on by a dedicated and passionate group of community activists, led by John King, who are working diligently to restore the community club.

After a late spring and a delayed start to construction, the Disraeli Bridges Project should be completed by July 31. This includes the Hespeler/Henderson intersection, the Active Transportation Bridge, and landscaping.

Under our first-in-Canada legislation requiring defibrillators in high-traffic public places, the Manitoba Government is providing over $1.3 million to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for 1,000 free defibrillators for non-profit and community-owned public facilities.

Every one of Elmwood’s 11 schools, the ‘Y’ on Kimberly, the Elmwood Curling Club, John Black Memorial United Church, and the Elmwood E.K. Active Living Centre will receive one of these life-saving devices over the next few months.

In February, the premier and I toured Miles Macdonell Collegiate’s new Science Lab. Funding of more than $240,000 was provided to the River East Transcona School Division to renovate the science classroom.

The collegiate also received $25,000 for the purchase of equipment and apparatus that will allow students to perform more complex experiments.
