Summer not the same without volunteers

All eyes are on Winnipeg as we host the Canada Summer Games.

The games showcase Canada’s up and coming athletes, many of whom will go on to compete internationally, and even in the Olympics in the years to come. Equally important, the Games will leave a legacy of enhanced facilities. In the West End, the Cindy Klassen Recreation Centre hosted Beach Volleyball in the first week of the Games, and will now have excellent sand volleyball courts along with many other amenities.

The Games came to Winnipeg because the provincial and city governments stepped up years ago to support them. But the Games are a success because so many people give their time to make them work. Over the past few months, there has been a massive mobilization of volunteers involved in the many sporting organizations and associations in the province.

The Games are a high-profile event this summer. However, we have so many other summer festivals and events that also thrive, thanks to the thousands of Manitobans who volunteer. Folklorama is right around the corner and is, as many of you know, one of my favourite summer events. For me, it doesn’t get any better than touring the city and enjoying the culture, cuisine and company of those who are eager to share their customs and traditions. I will try to get to as many of the 44 pavilions as I can.

I hope all of you have an event like Folklorama that you cherish and look forward to as much as I do. Of course, the constant thread throughout these events is the volunteer support that keeps them thriving. Without their commitment and dedication, our summers would be far less interesting. Thank you to all those who take time out to volunteer, whether it’s directing traffic, preparing food or serving beer. A Manitoba summer would not be the same without you.

If you are interested in getting involved in volunteer opportunities you should contact the folks at your favourite organization, or Volunteer Manitoba. They offer a continually updated list of volunteer positions in demand from organizations across the province.
