We celebrated the beginning of summer in Elmwood with two memorable events.

Happy Days on Henderson took place on June 11, then on June 27, the Elmwood community celebrated Canada Day. Congratulations to the co-ordinators and their legions of volunteers for makings these events so successful.

The 15th Annual Happy Days on Henderson took place on a beautiful Saturday. It was an afternoon full of entertainment, including a petting zoo, bike giveaways and free bike tune-ups, as well as games and face painting. There was also live music by local artists on the main stage, and free hot dogs, refreshments and popcorn were available. Our booth served up our usual lemonade to everyone.

The Canada Day celebration took place at Ernie O’Dowda Memorial Park beside the Louise Bridge. The event featured live music, bouncy castles for the kids, another great petting zoo, along with cotton candy and a free barbecue. There were also carnival games for the kids. We had a great time serving our lemonade, complete with fresh limes for some added zing. We renewed acquaintances, made new friends, and conducted our regular draw for free waterguns for the kids.

Thank you to the many residents who signed our Bell-MTS petition at both events. As you may know, Bell is seeking to acquire MTS. Losing MTS will mean less competition, the elimination of the current MTS unlimited data plans, and will result in much higher costs for all cell phone packages in the province. We’re trying to prevent that from happening by petitioning the provincial government to intervene with the Competition Bureau in the sale. What’s even more effective than these types of petitions is for individual local residents to file interventions with the Competition Bureau. You can actually go online and do this. Let us know if you need any help.

Finally, I’d like to offer my congratulations to all our Elmwood graduates. As we head into the summer months, I hope everyone enjoys a safe and healthy summer with lots of time for family and friends.

Every one of the teachers and support staff at our great schools — like Miles Macdonell, Elmwood High, and MBCI — deserve our thanks for another successful year. They’ve prepared our students for a happy productive future in so many ways.
