A big year for infrastructure

It was an unprecedented year of infrastructure spending in the province in 2015.

All three levels of government have, to one degree or another, taken the golden opportunity of record low borrowing rates to invest now to fix and improve our infrastructure; and the province has led the way.

This past year’s investment was impressive when you consider that recent years saw major contributions to large projects, like the new stadium at the University of Manitoba, a new airport terminal in the city of Winnipeg, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the MTS Centre, and major additions to the Health Sciences Centre and other healthcare facilities around the province. Elmwood residents use these facilities, of course, just like they benefit from Henderson Highway reconstruction and much needed road repairs that have begun in earnest.

It was also a significant year for provincial contributions to small, but important community projects right here in Elmwood. Projects that received a boost from provincial commitments in 2015 include Chalmers and Bronx Community Clubs, Clara Hughes Recreation Park, Care-A-Lot Nursery Inc., the Elmwood Giants Baseball Club Inc., and the 575 Larsen Playground.

Whether it’s roof repairs or kitchen repairs, upgrading to LED lighting or renovating community drop-in centres, or adding new spray features at a local playground, or a dust collection and electrical system for Bronx Park’s woodshop, all of these projects — big and small — add meaningful public assets to our community.

It’s important for citizens to know their tax dollars continue to be targeted to support and enhance many valued community initiatives. Everyone benefits when members of our community use these new assets. It truly is one of the important ways we grow our community.
