Located on Chalmers Avenue just across from Elmwood High School, Koskie Field is an impressive asset for our community.

If you haven’t had a chance to stop by in a while, you should stop in and take a look — or better yet, watch the Elmwood Giants play. They’ve represented our community with distinction for over 100 years.

This Thanksgiving, the Elmwood Giants Baseball Club hit it out of the park with their new bleachers at Koskie Field. Community members can now enjoy much more comfortable seating while they cheer on our local baseball team. These new bleachers are the product of a great deal of work on the part of the baseball club’s dedicated volunteers.

The Chalmers Community Centre, whose facility is right next door is no different than our other local community clubs. It relies on an active and dedicated volunteer base and so do the Elmwood Giants baseball teams. Led by President Ken St. Germain and past president Al Kinley, the Elmwood Giants have great volunteers who are passionate about baseball. This hard-working group can be proud of its contribution to the sport and to our community.

Our government has been able to complement the work of the Elmwood Giants’ volunteers by providing $50,000 in financial support for the new bleachers through the Community Places Program. The money was also able to support other aspects of the recent renovations, including a new press box and new permanent washrooms. We were able to provide further support to the club through the Manitoba Green Team program, which provided the club with the financial resources to hire a young person to take care of the grounds maintenance during the summer.

Investing in the Elmwood Giants and Koskie Field is particularly important since it gets so much community use. A wide variety of community members come out to watch the Elmwood Giants’ teams play, in addition to the other groups, such as the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, who occasionally play there. It is a great place for families to spend time together and learn more about baseball.

The Elmwood Giants Baseball Club has the ambitious goal of hosting the Baseball Canada Under 21 Championships in the future, and are also looking ahead to Winnipeg’s bid for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.
