Elmwood MLA Jim Maloway checks in on the renovations to the change rooms at the Clara Hughes Recreation Park with John King, Elmwood community activist, this past July.

Many of you will recall that last June, the City and the Province announced a joint infrastructure investment of $100,000 to build a new canteen, multi-purpose space and accessible washrooms at Clara Hughes Recreation Park’s field house.

Both levels of government have worked hard to get these renovations going, and the improvements are now underway — renovations started last week on July 28.

Congratulations to Elmwood’s Price Industries on their recently-announced 50,000-square-foot manufacturing headquarters expansion. Located here in Winnipeg on Raleigh Street, Price Industries employs a local workforce of up to 850 people. These and other investments in Price Research Centre North will create up to 175 new jobs, expand local training opportunities and cement the company’s core North American research and engineering capability in Manitoba.

To support its expansion, the provincial government is providing a $10-million repayable, interest-bearing, secured loan under the Manitoba Industrial Opportunities Program (MIOP). In addition, the province will contribute $1.5 million to train the highly skilled workers needed for the expansion.

In other news, the unusually wet weather we’ve been experiencing hit us hard at the Elmwood Community Resource Centre’s Canada Day celebrations on Fri., June 27 at Ernie O’Dowda Park.

Our free lemonade stand was doing brisk business in the sweltering heat when the skies opened up on everyone and gave us a good soaking. It was fun while it lasted, but the extreme weather event cut our participation short. The good news is that we were able to get out an evening’s worth of lemonade in the short time we were in the heat. I’m counting on better luck for us all next year.
