Summer 2013 is now behind us and most of us are now resuming our busy fall schedules. Parents are back to work and children are back in school.

Many of you driving down Henderson Highway after work this late summer will have noticed the welcome changes taking shape to the former Kelvin Community Club site, now renamed the Clara Hughes Recreation Park, in honour of Elmwood’s own Clara Hughes. You will also have surely noticed many local children already playing on the play structures after the construction workers have left for the day. I’m sure their parents also feel the excitement of this important community project, which will be opening soon.

Although the province and city have worked hand in hand to make solid improvements to the site since the city tore down the clubhouse in 2007, I know more needs to be done there, and I will continue to work towards restoring the site to its full potential.

Last month’s announcement by the province to add an additional $60,000 from the Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program towards more renovations to the fieldhouse is part of our ongoing commitment.

Another $20,000 from the Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program was awarded to Status4 for upgrades to audio equipment. Located at the East End Cultural and Leisure Centre at 575 Larsen Ave., this innovative and non-profit organization, led by its president and CEO Kevin Gibson, is dedicated to providing free and affordable recreation programs for youth eight to 17 years old including music, martial arts and dance.
