Government Focuses on Creating More Opportunities in the North

Renewed Northern Development Strategy Key to Continued Success: Robinson

30 June 2010

MLA Frank Whitehead hosted Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson and Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk here today to renew the provincial strategy aimed at improving education, health, housing, transportation and economic opportunities in the North. Transportation Minister Steve Ashton joined the meeting by phone from Thompson, as did MLA Gerard Jennissen from Cranberry Portage where he continues to monitor the forest fire situation.

"Our government has always believed strongly in the importance of investing in the North while working with northern communities to identify priorities," said Robinson. "By making strategic investments over the past ten years we have seen success in a number of areas, and today’s meeting is about looking ahead and setting priorities for the next decade."

Robinson cited the expansion of University College of the North including new housing, investments in northern healthcare facilities such as the Berens River Health Centre, expansion of the mandate of the Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF), and training and employment opportunities related to the East Side Road as examples of success in each of the priority areas of the Northern Development Strategy.

"Opportunities are constantly evolving and this was a good opportunity to identify the best ways to continue to move the North forward," said Wowchuk. "Providing education and employment opportunities for youth in the North will remain a high priority, as will economic development, infrastructure and quality healthcare for all Northerners."
