Rally and Petition

On January 23, Gordon Bell High School students held a rally in front of a vacant lot which was the former Midway Chrysler dealership on Portage Avenue.

Alumni and other community activists got together in support of the student’s efforts to have the vacant lot turned into an athletic field.

Currently the vacant lot is slated to become a Canada Post depot in early fall. Students hope the rally will convince Canada Post to build the depot on an alternate site.

Canada Post would consider relocating the depot if they can find a suitable site. Canada Post requires a site that is:

  • 2 ½ acres large

  • Downtown (the parameters of downtown are set up by the City of Winnipeg and are available on the City’s website)

  • On a main thoroughfare

  • Good access and egress (exiting) for the trucks on the main thoroughfare

  • Close enough to Canada Post customers where letter carriers can go on foot or take the bus from their site.

Local politicians, residents and businesses are trying to locate a site that would be suitable for Canada Post.

Students from Gordon Bell High School along with alumni have been dreaming of having a field to call their own for years. The dream may yet come true.
